The 1938 TCU Horned Frogs
“Fight until hell freezes over. Then fight on the ice.” - Dutch Meyer
Led by TCU coaching legend Dutch Meyer, the 1938 Horned Frogs sped out of the starting gate and never looked back. In that history-making season, The Frogs outscored their opponents 269-60 and held nine of their 10 regular season opponents to seven points or less. TCU had three first-team All-Americans in quarterback Davey O’Brien, center Ki Aldrich and tackle I.B. Hale. But perhaps most noteworthy is that Davey O’Brien became the first player from both TCU and the Southwest Conference to win the Heisman Trophy. With “Little Davey,” the 5’ 7” quarterback from Dallas at the helm, the 11-0 Frogs defeated Carnegie Tech 15-7 in the Sugar Bowl to become the consensus No. 1 team in the nation. This accomplishment is even more significant when you consider that TCU outpolled three other undefeated teams, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Duke to claim the title that year.

Not only did Davey O'Brien lead the Horned Frogs to a national championship in 1938, he also won the Heisman Trophy award as College Football's greatest player that year as well. The diminutive 5' 7" quarterback from Dallas, holds the NCAA record for most rushing and passing plays in a single season and today, the award given annually to college football's best quarterback, is the Davey O'Brien Award.
